Dinner at Gus's

I have booked a table at Gus's Cafe in Civic for our dinner on 3/11/08. Gus's is the oldest outdoor cafe in Canberra and one of the most popular. I went there at 10.00am on a Saturday morning and the place was packed. The time dinner is booked for is 7.00pm. We are outside (booking officer advised this was more sought after area) and whilst most evenings here at the moment are perfectly find outside in a shirt (it was 28 degrees yesterday) it can be a bit chilly in the evenings and a jacket/wrap may be needed.

Below is a link with a little information and access to a map so you can find it. It has parking quite close (you do have to pay for it though it is cheap after 6pm) and there are buses/taxis available if you would prefer.

Itinery is now set

We had a lovely dinner and chat at the River Arms in Ulverstone and Tuesday is now set. We will have a look at the National Museum of Australia which is at Acton right near the University (very handy for anyone staying at University House) and possibly the National Film and Sound Archives which is between the University and the Museum.

A couple of the attendees have said they will arrive in Canberra early on the Sunday and go to Cockington Green on the Monday (charming old style miniature village and gardens) so if you want to join the other garden lovers feel free.

Floriade will be over but the flowers will still be blooming in Commonwealth Park (along the lake edge opposite the old Parliament House) and Canberra is very pretty this time of year.

I'm off to Canberra in a week and a half for my work experience and will post more after I have arrived and settled in.

The Itinery is starting to Gel

The itinery is starting to finally gel into something a bit more solid. The restaurant for Monday night is not yet decided as I believe it would be better if it is one of the ones in the CBD (there are heaps) to make transport easy for everyone and I would prefer to take a look in person rather than just picking one off the net. I'll give everyone an update on where around mid October when I will have had a chance to try a couple of places out. If you have been to Canberra recently and have any suggestions please tell me.

Tuesday is still totally up in the air as to what we are doing as I have had no suggestions from anyone yet. I suggest we meet up somewhere after work in the next couple of weeks and have a discussion on where to go/what to do. From checking around on the net most of the places are open just not the bits we would be interested in as library technicians.

Wednesday morning as previously advised in this blog will be the National Library and I have now got confirmation of from the National Art Gallery that we will have a tour there on the Wednesday afternoon. They will talk to us in their small theatre and a tour of the Research Library. They have also offered to bring in some of their special collections and archives from off site storage for us to look at. On top of this they are very nicely putting on afternoon tea for us which we will probably need. There will be some time for a quick look at what is on at the gallery displays as well.

Thursday morning will be breakfast at the Last Outpost (just outside the war memorial) followed by a tour of the memorial. I was thinking of taking one of the 1.5 hour general tours of the memorial in this case rather than just asking for a tour of the research centre. If anyone would prefer another type of tour we can discuss it at our get together and I will contact the War Memorial to arrange. All tours at the War Memorial are given by volunteers not by the staff. Thursday afternoon will be up to the individual. You may wish to spend more time at the Memorial or go shopping or someplace like the National Film and Sound Archives that we may not have got to earlier. I admit I will probably be doing some last minute shopping prior to an early night as I have to drive back to Melbourne the next day to catch the ferry home.

See you soon.

Whew!!

Wow, what a list. It looks as though two weeks would be better than one, but be assured that everyone will have a list of more things to do on their next trip to Canberra.

Schedules are a pain!

I wish I hadn't put that bit in the last e-mail about the schedule possibly changing. If I hadn't I might not have to start re-arranging it already.

Anyway some new info I only got a couple of days ago is that Tuesday 4/11/2008 is as of this year a public holiday in Melbourne. As to how secret this is not even the locals know. I was arranging for us to visit the NLA in the morning and talking to Catherine at the NLA when she tried to book the time in and couldn't. She had to go away to find out that this is now Family and Community Day in the ACT. Since it is set up for the first tuesday in November rather than the date 4/11 they really should have called it booze and bet day since that is what most of them will be doing.

So the tour of the NLA is now set for Wednesday 5/11 in the morning and below is the schedule they have given me.

9.15 - 10.00 General introduction to library operations
10.00 - 10.10 Tour main reading room, travel to stacks via tube room (Catherine)
10.10 - 10.15 Stacks
10.15 - 10.25 Inter-library loan
10.30 - 10.45 Preservation 10.45 - 11.15 Librarian technicians presentation.

Wednesday afternoon will be the NGA just a couple of hundred meters up the road.

Due to the public holiday on 4/11 the general part of all the venues would still be open on that day but the library staff will generally will not be there so no tours on offer. A couple of options we have is to either just take a general gander through
  • the New Parliament House and NFSA,
  • visit War Memorial in morning (research room will be closed) and shop or whatever in the afternoon,
  • or skip New Parliament House and NFSA altogether and look at some of the other attractions around Canberra on the Tuesday and War Memorial on Thursday as per original plan. Questacon is not just for kids and Cockington green or the Deep Space Communication complex are also fun, whilst if you really want to go wild there is always the zoo.
If no one puts their 2 cents in I will just go with what I think would be the most fun.

Online

Great, we are online and can get information happening now! Welcome to every one who has expressed interest in joining the Canberra Ramble for Tassie Lib Techs, being organised by Trina.
There has been talk about getting together to discuss the possibility of sharing transport, accomodation etc, so what is the feeling out there?
This can be a facility for bringing the Hobart people together as well as the North West people.
I look forward to the discussion.
Cheers, Glenyce

Why a blog?

I figured we needed a forum to disperse information and discuss possibilities for our trip in November.

Firstly please remember that this is Melbourne cup week and transport from Tassie to Melbourne may be problematic. I am not sure but I believe that there is no direct flights from Tassie to Canberra and I can see lots of people heading over for the cup in melbourne. I have not looked at this too closely myself as I am heading to Canberra earlier by car.
